North region, in the heart of Brazil, 180km away from Palmas, capital of the state of Tocantins. The average annual temperature is 30°C/86°F. Jalapão is like an oasis in an arid region, with sparse vegetation and low population density. The "golden grass", a species of evergreen typical of the region, is a straw that shines like gold, used in the making of jewelry, hat and several other objects.
From May to September, during the dry season.
Parque Estadual de Jalapão (Jalapão State Park): a place of exuberant beauty and many natural attractions, it is one of the most beautiful regions of the country, with 34,000 square kilometers.
Serra do Espírito Santo: plateaus, dunes formed over millions of years and rivers form an unparalleled setting and make this one of the most beautiful and secluded destinations in Brazil.
Cachoeira da Formiga: with emerald-green waters, its beauty is incomparable: 8 meters in diameter by 2m of maximum depth waterfall amid native vegetation.
Fervedouros: ponds in which you cannot sink? Yes! A boiling well in which the resurgence (water that does not stop sprouting from the clear sands) pushes you up to the surface, regardless of weight or the pressure exerted on the water. It is accessible by car and after a short walk.
Cachoeira da Velha: a huge waterfall in the form of a horseshoe approximately 100 meters wide and 15 meters high.
Rio Novo: ideal for rafting (descent of rapids in team, using inflatable boats and safety equipment), the fun is guaranteed also thanks to Rio Novo’s transparent waters and sand banks. The delicious beach, located between two banks, provides moments of relaxation. Do you also like canoeing, rappelling, acquaride (descending rapids over inner tube)? Then don’t miss Rio Novo in Tocantins.
Dunas do Jalapão: "inexplicable, unforgettable". This is how a tourist described the result of the erosion of rocky mountains that, over time, formed the Dunas de Jalapão (Dunes of Jalapão), with heights of 200 to 400 meters. From the top of the dunes you can see the Serra do Espírito Santo, the green of the ground vegetation, the buritizais (forest of buritis, a Brazilian-native palm tree) the lakes and the paths of golden grass that make it look like an oasis.
