Its construction began in 1585. In 1631 the Dutch who invaded Brazil destroyed a part of the convent, which was later rebuilt in the same seventeenth century style. The Basilica and Monastery of São Bento is the richest church in Olinda. Its beautiful wooden altar carved in baroque style is coated with 28 pounds of gold.
