The village on the cliff

Arraial d’Ajuda sits just across from Porto Seguro, on the other side of the Buranhém River. The village grew up on high ground around its white church and slopes down to a string of beaches lined with reefs and cliffs.

Its colorful lanes, such as Rua do Mucugê, are packed with craft shops, cafés and restaurants. It makes a convenient base for exploring the Discovery Coast: Trancoso and Caraíva lie farther south, and the airport is close by.

When to go

It is warm year-round on the Bahia coast, with water temperatures around 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F). From September to March, the weather is drier and sunnier. From April to July, showers are more frequent, usually brief, though some days stay gray.

Things to do

The historic center and the church

The small colorful houses around the square and the church of Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda, with a view over the spot where the river meets the sea.

Praia do Mucugê

The village beach, with calm water and natural pools that form at low tide.

Praia do Parracho

A lively beach with beach shacks and water sports: paddleboarding, snorkeling and diving.

Praia da Pitinga

A few kilometers from the center, clear green water at the foot of multicolored cliffs.

The Taípe cliffs

Farther south, on the road to Trancoso, tall ocher and red cliffs tower over an unspoiled beach.

How do I get to Arraial d’Ajuda?

From Porto Seguro airport, it is a few minutes by road to the ferry, then a short crossing of the Buranhém River. We arrange the transfer all the way to your pousada.

Arraial d’Ajuda or Trancoso?

Arraial d’Ajuda is livelier and easier to reach; Trancoso is more upscale and quieter. Many travelers combine the two.

Is it a good destination for families?

Yes: the reef-sheltered beaches offer calm swimming at low tide, and the village has plenty of family-friendly pousadas.
