Caraíva

A car-free village with sand streets, between the Caraíva River and the ocean, in the far south of Bahia.

Region

Bahia, Discovery Coast

Recommended stay

3 to 4 nights

Best time to go

September to March

Getting there

Flight to Porto Seguro, about 2.5 to 3 hours by road (partly on a dirt road), then a river crossing by dugout canoe

The village you reach by canoe

Caraíva is a former fishing village set between a river mouth and a long, palm-fringed beach. Cars stay on the other side of the river: you cross by dugout canoe, and your bags follow by cart along the sand streets.

The village has kept a simple, unspoiled feel, with its wooden pousadas, restaurants with your feet in the sand and evenings of forró. All around, nature takes over: mangroves, empty beaches and Monte Pascoal National Park, the land of the Pataxó people.

When to go

It is warm year-round on the Bahia coast, with water temperatures around 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F). From September to March, the weather is drier and sunnier. From April to July, showers are more frequent, usually brief, though some days stay gray.

  • September to March: drier, sunnier season
  • April to July: rainy season
  • August: transition, often pleasant

Things to do

The beach and the river mouth

Several kilometers of pale sand where the river’s fresh water meets the sea. You can go from one to the other in a few steps, and sunset over the river is the highlight of the day.

Floating down the river on an inner tube

You head up the Caraíva River by boat, then let the current carry you back down between mangroves and coconut palms.

Ponta do Corumbau

A sandbar reaching out into very clear water, reached by boat or by beach buggy along the shore, for a day of swimming and snorkeling.

The Pataxó village of Barra Velha

Inside Monte Pascoal National Park, a visit with the Pataxó community, its crafts and its history, on foot, on horseback or by buggy.

Forró nights

In the evening, after dinner, the village gathers in the forró halls. Caraíva’s forró is one of the best known in Bahia.

Where to stay
