The island of magic
Brazilians call it “the island of magic.” Florianópolis covers almost all of Santa Catarina Island: beaches for every taste, a large lagoon ringed by hills, dunes, and Atlantic Forest that is still very much present.
The fishing villages founded by settlers from the Azores have kept their colorful houses and churches, and the island is famous for its oysters. A quieter destination, with a more European feel than the Northeast.
When to go
From November to March, it is the southern summer: heat, warmer water and beach season, with crowds in January. From April to October, it is cooler, sometimes cold in July, but it is the right season for the trails. From July to November, southern right whales come to give birth off the south of the island.
