Getting there
Flight to Foz do Iguaçu
Two banks, two points of view
The Iguaçu River plunges into a gorge in a wide arc of waterfalls. Brazil and Argentina each protect their bank within a national park, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
On the Brazilian side, you take in the whole sweep of the falls at a glance. On the Argentine side, walkways lead you right up to the water, as far as the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat). The two visits complement each other.
When to go
The falls can be visited year-round. Their flow depends on rainfall: often stronger during the hot, humid southern-hemisphere summer, more modest in the dry season. Some walkways may close occasionally depending on the water level.
- March to November: pleasant temperatures
- December to February: heat, humidity and often a stronger flow

Things to do
The Brazilian side
The Trilha das Cataratas, from one lookout to the next, all the way to the walkway facing the Garganta do Diabo.
The Argentine side
A network of walkways in the middle of the falls, out to the Garganta del Diablo when that trail is open.
Parque das Aves
A conservation center dedicated to the birds of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), at the entrance to the Brazilian park.
Boat ride to the foot of the falls
An optional boat trip that gets up close to the cascades. You come back soaked.
The Itaipu Dam
One of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world, worth adding to your visit.
Where to stay
Inside the park
For the experience. The Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, the only hotel inside the park on the Brazilian side, a short walk from the falls.
Foz do Iguaçu
For good value. Hotels and resorts along the road to the falls, a few minutes from the park.

FAQ
Do I need a passport for the Argentine side?
Yes. Visiting the Argentine side means crossing a border: a valid passport is essential, and entry requirements depend on your nationality.
Is one side enough?
If you’re short on time, the Brazilian side gives you the overall view in half a day. But the two sides complement each other very well, and two nights are enough to see everything.
Will we get wet?
Near the falls, the spray is heavy, especially at the Garganta. Bring a light rain jacket and protection for your camera.
