About a 2-hour drive from Maceió or Recife

Brazil’s Caribbean

Maragogi stretches along the north coast of Alagoas, between Maceió and Recife. Offshore, its coral reef forms natural pools of a striking turquoise, the Galés, which earned the area its nickname, the “Brazilian Caribbean.”

At low tide, catamarans take visitors out to the reefs to swim among the fish. On shore, palm-fringed beaches and the villages of the Milagres Ecological Route round out your stay.

When to go

From September to March, the dry season brings a calm sea and very clear water. From April to July, rain is more frequent and visibility at the natural pools can be poorer.

Things to do

The Galés of Maragogi

The best-known natural pools, a few miles offshore, reached by catamaran at low tide. The number of visitors is capped each day.

Taocas and Barra Grande

Other natural pools, smaller and often less crowded, with rich marine life.

Praia de Antunes

A beach of coconut palms and calm water, one of the most beautiful in the area.

The Milagres Ecological Route

To the south, unspoiled fishing villages such as São Miguel dos Milagres and Porto de Pedras, with their charming pousadas.

The northern beaches

Japaratinga and the border with Pernambuco, for beaches that are still quiet.

Where to stay

Maragogi

For access to the Galés. Beachfront hotels and pousadas, close to the boat departures.

São Miguel dos Milagres

For charm. Refined pousadas on calm beaches, about 25 miles to the south.

FAQ

How do I get to Maragogi?

By road, in about 2 hours from Maceió or Recife airport. We arrange the private transfer.

Can you visit the natural pools year-round?

Yes, but outings only run at low tide, and the number of visitors is capped. We book your outing in advance, at the right time.

Maragogi or Porto de Galinhas?

Both are famous for their natural pools. Maragogi is more about the beach and the big reefs; Porto de Galinhas is livelier. You can combine them in the same trip.
