Praia do Forte is a former fishing village on the Coconut Coast, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Salvador. Its pedestrian street leads down to the sea, lined with shops, cafés and restaurants, and the beach stretches for miles beneath the coconut palms.
The village is home to a historic base of Projeto Tamar, dedicated to protecting sea turtles. At low tide, the reefs form natural pools, and from July to October, humpback whales come to breed offshore.
When to go
The sun shines almost year-round. From September to March, the weather is at its driest. Rain is more frequent from April to July. July to October is humpback whale season; September to March is turtle nesting season.

Things to do
The natural pools
Right in front of the village, the reefs hold pools of clear water at low tide, where you can swim with a mask and snorkel.
Projeto Tamar
The base of the sea turtle conservation project: pools, explanations from the biologists and, depending on the season, releases of baby turtles.
Whale watching
From July to October, a boat trip to watch the humpback whales that come to breed in Bahia’s warm waters.
Garcia d’Ávila Castle
The ruins of one of the oldest fortified houses in Brazil, dating from the 16th century, with a fine view of the coast.
Sapiranga Reserve
Trails through the Atlantic Forest, on foot or by bike, and a swim in the Pojuca River.

How do I get to Praia do Forte?
Along the Linha Verde highway, in about an hour from Salvador airport. We arrange the private transfer.
When can I see the turtles?
Nesting takes place mainly from September to March. The Projeto Tamar center is open to visitors year-round.
Praia do Forte or Imbassaí?
Praia do Forte is livelier, with its pedestrian street and restaurants; Imbassaí, about six miles away, is quieter and closer to nature.
